W.E.B. DUBOIS ACADEMY

In 1997, the Black Men of Greater Springfield, in collaboration with the Million Man March Committee, established the W.E.B. Dubois Academy to address the need of providing focused support in math and science to boys in third, fourth and fifth grades.   This focused support was based on individual tutoring and also included reading, history and swimming.

The Springfield School Department supported this initiative by providing space at the Rebecca Johnson school, assisting in the development of the math and science curriculum and providing study materials.  Community members from area businesses and colleges assisted as well by presenting special presentations that related to everyday applications of math and science.  The financial support was solely provided by the  treasury of BMGS.

In 1998, the Academy moved to the Springfield Family Center on Acorn Street.  By joining the Academy and the Family Center together, this gave the students additional learning and activity space and the opportunity to receive more nutritional meals through the use of the full commercial kitchen that was on-site.

In 2005, the Academy moved to the Springfield Boys and Girls Club on Carew Street where we have full use of the facilities.  The students enjoy the classrooms, computer lab, pool, gymnasium, game room, kitchen and library.  The Academy operates 30 Saturdays annually from 9:00 am until 1:00 pm.
